He introduced the term ''asthenopia'' and was the first to describe sympathetic ophthalmia as a distinct disease» (Source Book of Ophthalmology, n. 1425, la prima ediz. 1830). L'autore (1791-1868) studiò medicina ed oftalmologia a Glasgow, sua città natale, e poi a Londra, Parigi, Vienna ed in alcune città italiane (1815-1818); dal 1827 si stabilì in patria, ove insegnò oftalmologia all'Università.
